Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

It looks as if winter has finally arrived in Cow-town.  I awoke to a skiff of snow on the ground and it's  still coming down.  I am glad that winter's here...it makes going to the gym that much easier for me.

This past week (week 1 of the winter maintenance program) was good - although the first few workouts were harder than I anticipated.  I'm chalking that up to getting back into the groove of things, and not my overly successful recovery period (from August through to now).

Yesterday, we did the Santa Shuffle - a 5K - with Jocelyn.  We signed up for it a couple months ago, and completed the learn-to-run program at the Running Room.  I agreed to stay with her for the whole race and we crossed in 41 minutes...it was a great milestone for her.  For me, it was a challenge to go that slow (never thought I'd say that).

Today is a "double brick", like a single brick isn't enough - someone thought a bike-run-bike-run combination looked like a good idea. Luckily, it's not an overly long session, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

All for now...

Let the training begin...

Well we're back from Mexico and recovery season is officially over. Tonight I signed up for my own beginner triathlon membership and created both a winter maintenance and half-Ironman training program to keep/get me on track.  I moved today's workout to Saturday, as I didn't realize it was going to start immediately (I was sorta hoping for another couple of days to ease into it). Talk about hitting the ground running.

Oh well, no rest for the wicked...and have I been wicked (at least in my eating).  I have to admit I am looking forward to getting back on the wagon (I have been doing some light running off and on), so this is exactly what I have been looking for.

It has been an emotional couple of weeks.  The highs of Mexico were quickly erased with the news of my brother-in-law, who lost his long battle with cancer last week. That was also an eye-opener for me to get back on track and with the program.  It's ironic how it takes something so serious like death to wake you up.  I'm glad his battle is finally over and his suffering has finally ended.  I'm also thankful for the people in my life, you all know who you are - especially Alan and Jocelyn.

I doubt I'll be blogging much more than once a week...we'll play it by ear.

White rabbit, white rabbit...

We are officially gearing up for next season...Alan and I have upgraded the Jeep, for a new...are you ready...a new mini-van! And are we excited.  It'll be perfect for crew support for Alan's IronMan in Coeur d'Alene; both toting all the gear around and making sure the roadside support crew are comfortable.  It'll also come in very handy for those family ski trips...lots of room for skis and passengers, and the DVD players will keep everyone amused on the ride out.  Luckily, it's the same color as the Jeep - white - so we'll still be able to keep the name, "White Rabbit" when we caravan to the mountains.

Training this week has been somewhat dismal...as it's quarter end at work, and there are a ton of board reports that needed to get done.  There were many late nights at the office (as late as 10 and  midnight); although I did manage to squeeze in a bike and a swim on Saturday, and a lunch hour run on Wednesday - so it wasn't a total write off.  This week will be better, as the reports have been mailed out, and it's "business as usual", so I expect to run at least 4 days this week and get a swim and a bike in, too.

All for now...kids are starting to arrive.  Trick or treat? I choose trick!

breathe in, breathe out...

We did it...Alan and I officially completed our open water dives this weekend, in Lake Minnewanka (that's in Banff - and yes the water was bloody cold).  The water was so cold it almost took your breath away (not to mention other body parts that seemed to disappear)  ...when we had to remove our masks, it was a real shock to the system...I kept telling myself to breathe in, breathe out.  I just wanted it to be over.  I accidentally swallowed a little water during one of our drills, which resulted in a slight panic and lots of coughing.  Alan came close to running out of air on our last dive. At the time, both incidents seemed quite eventful and exciting, but they were really much ado about nothing.  In hindsight, it was great fun - even in the cold mountain water - and we are really looking forward to Mexico where we will be diving in much warmer water.

I managed to get in a few runs last week, which were uneventful, but runs nonetheless.  As for swimming, the Lake was enough for me.  I also didn't realize how much work it would be lugging 30 lbs of extra weight around (that's how much weight I had to add to my wetsuit while diving) and the weights fit in the pockets of the vest (called a BCD).  So the whole time I was wearing the vest, I was toting the weights up and down the stairs every time we got out of the water. That must count for something towards my strength training. I know I was bloody tired at the end of both days...

All for now...

first season...somewhat underwhelming

My inaugural triathlon season was an overwhelming success...OK, more like underwhelming.  My goal for every race was "to finish" and my results were consistent in that regard.  I'm officially in recovery mode - aka weight gain mode.  Bring on the Turkey!

I've been running - albeit not much - for the past few weeks.  The Harvest Half was more like a long, slow run than a race - and I was glad to get out and enjoy the course.  Reading Charlie Brown's blog has been inspirational, not to mention quite humorous - and it has me wanting to get back in the pool.  So that'll happen this week-end.

We bought a trainer for our bikes and I've ridden a few times, however it's much different that riding outside.  I'll continue to give it the "college try" and see how it goes.  I don't have the desire to face a 6 am spin class - so that's out.

The maintenance season for 2009 has begun...the Great White North is only 9 months away.

I did it...

I have to admit putting all three events back-to-back-to-back was a little harder than the brick workouts I have been doing at the gym (even when I combined all three legs).  However, this morning was a great introduction into the triathlon world...and I loved it.

My swim was great - 500 m - first one out of the pool (OK so I started with the slow swimmers)...anyway, back to me.  The transition to the bike was better than yesterday's practice, but I can see how this could make or break a race for the experienced triathlete.  I managed to do OK and was off on the bike course in a couple of minutes.  The 16K course was good - and I kept telling myself to save something for the run.  I am glad I did...because I needed it.  It took me almost the whole 3K to finally get my legs after the bike...luckily the next race (in two weeks) has a longer run and I will be able to settle into it (maybe that's not such a good thing).

I don't know my time because in the panic of getting in the pool, then out of the pool (due to the late arrival of the timing belts), I forgot to start my watch.  I think it will be around 1:07...which is better than my goal of 1:10.

Hurray for me!

Today's the day...

Well today's the day we see what all this "triathlon fuss" is about...it's the Try This Triathlon.

I'm a little nervous, but more tired and wondering why they don't have a mid-morning/early afternoon event for those of us who prefer to sleep in a little later.

I'm lucky to have Alan with me to support me - and will let you know how it goes.  I really hope the rain holds off until the run (I can handle running in the rain - but biking in the rain, sucks).

Cheers!

Here I am...

Hey all..it's been a while since I've posted anything.  You could say, I lost that blogging feeling (bad pun, I know).  I've been so tired at the end of the day lately that I don't have the energy to make an entry on my blog...although I have been fairly diligent in my workouts, so not all has been lost.

Last I shared, we completed the Policemen's Half Marathon and since then I ran the Mother's Day 10K, with a PB of 1:02:02.  I was aiming for 1:10, so I was extremely pleased to be so close to the 1 hour mark.  Next year's goal is definitely under 1 hour.

The weather has finally improved enough to venture out on the new bike.  So far I have managed to un-clip successfully as required.  I am waiting for the day I forget and have a humpty-dumpty. I'll be sure to share that.   Last night I did 25K in an hour even, which was a very comfortable pace - even with the mother of all hills at the very end of the ride.  So I think all the indoor cycling has definitely made a difference (I think it might have something to do with my faster run time, too). Who knows maybe this whole tri training thing is working.

My weight loss has stopped...and in fact I'm putting on a few pounds. Likely due to appetite changes, but mostly it feels like water.  I am about 8 pounds away from my "goal weight" and I'm sure I will get there in the next few weeks.  I am not nearly as worried about it, as I am quite comfortable where I am at (my clothes are too big and working out is very manageable - so things are good).

We're off to PEI tomorrow...and we've planned an 18K run into town. More like a run to justify lunch at the other end...deep fried clams and chips, and a deep fried mars bar for dessert.  My stomach is already gurgling at the thought of it.  And we've coordinated the ride home already, so we don't have run back (thank goodness).  I think a few morning swims are also planned and those will be in exchange for the lobster, mussels, beer and other local fares.  I'll be back on the wagon big time after this holiday.

All for now...

No napping for the hare this year...

OK...so the times aren't official yet, but the "tortoise" finished the half in 2:23 +/- (we'll see what the web says tomorrow as the official time). It felt great...my knee was excellent and I actually had more in reserve at the end than I thought (although not much).  Thankfully, Alan walked back and met me with about a half kilometer to go...that helped.  However, the route changed so I thought I had more to go than I did so his words of encouragement weren't as well received at the time as they could've been.

Either way...no regrets.  I'm happy with my time and have something to work towards next year.

I'll let Alan tell you about his time...which was awesome!

Now, it serious tri-training time.  No more half marathon noise...

Cheers!

The tortoise and the hare...

Today's the day...3 months of running all in preparation for the big "race".

Given Alan's goal time of sub two hours (or 1:45 according to Jen), I am reminded of the Tortoise and the Hare - as me and the girls are running solely to finish.  If Alan falls asleep beside a tree mid-way through, I'll be sure to pass him.

Update to follow...

Did I mention he's stiff?

So I finally bought a bike...let me tell you about it.  He's big (50 cm), stiff, and made of ALUXX butted aluminum sprinkled over top of some carbon yumminess.

Wanna hear some more...you know you do.  He's versatile and spirited, has triple cranks for performance and his frame will deliver forgiving positions for all-day comfort and nimble handling.

Now all I have to do it name him.  I'd like something clever...did I mention he's stiff?

I've got it...Dirk.

Let it snow, let it snow...

You all know the rest.  I haven't been inspired to update my blog for a couple of weeks and I can't quite figure out why.  I really enjoyed it at first, but it seems to have lost the appeal. I wonder if it's more of a "winter thing" - hence my update today.  With the weather so nice, I've moved a lot of my workouts outside - and I am loving it.  I have more color now than after the cruise, go figure.

I am keeping up to date with the triathlon training - and the half marathon is next Sunday (I sure hope the snow is gone by then).  So far, so good with the knee and weight.  I am 2 pounds away from my goal weight for the half - so we'll see what the week brings.  After this, it's pure triathlon training - lots of biking and swimming - and the dreaded brick workouts.  I am especially worried about the bike/run combination.

I was down another 2.6 lbs this week at WW - and am now 7 lbs from my goal weight.  I am confident I can achieve that before the summer is over.  Once the half marathon is over, I will be adding some strength training to my workouts - and that will help tone some of the "softer" parts.

All for now...

this treadmill must be broken...

Well last night was officially a rest night...and did I enjoy it.  I was in bed by 8:30 and asleep shortly after that.  In fact, the phone rang before 9 and I didn't even hear it. I felt like a million dollars this morning when I woke up.  However, that didn't last long.

Today was speed work again at the gym...the weather was supposed to be cold and miserable, so we decided to run inside.  I used the "new" treadmill - the one everyone says is the best.  I'm not so sure...I think there's something wrong with this "new" treadmill...my work outs are longer, harder and faster.  Did I mention that I broke through the 8 minute mile mark on the new tread mill - oh yeah!  That's right, after a good night's sleep and some serious leg work (skiing), I seem to have recovered and am ready to re-join the herd.

I had a dinner engagement tonight with work and missed my bike and swim, so I will do those tomorrow night to make up.  Then I will only be one workout behind...looks like Thursday and Friday will be double workouts.  What a way to end the week!

Cheers!

Culled from the herd...

They say you don't feel the pain until a couple of days later...and they're absolutely right.  After skiing on Friday and Saturday, the long slow run on Sunday (18K) was enough to push me over the edge.  As of this morning I thought I was going to lose all feelings in my legs. Oh wait, I'm confused...I meant to say, I wished I would lose all feeling in my legs.  And my hips...and the rest of my lower body for that matter.

The pain really started to kick in about supper time on Sunday.  The hot tub relieved the agony for a little while, but even it wasn't enough. I took some Motrin and that helped me fall asleep. Today, I hobbled around the office like some senior citizen who'd had both hips and knees replaced all at the same time.  Luckily, a quick noon run managed to flush the lactic acid from my legs and I managed to survive the rest of the day.

Tonight is officially a rest day - well not officially, as it's supposed to be a bike/swim.  However, with three days of intense leg work, I have decided I am taking it off.  So now, it's official.

I must be an old buffalo and have culled myself from the herd.  Bring on the coyotes...

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

wow that was fast...

Today was a 29 minute run, so I decided to do speed work.  Because my running buddy didn't bring her outdoor gear, we used the treadmills at work (which I am OK with).  We started off with the intention of two 10:1's...but then my iPod was on a fast song and I couldn't help but increase the speed.  First it was just over 6 (a fast pace for me on the treadmill normally), and then 6.4, then 6.8...I was really moving. Before I knew it, I was over 7 and on my way to 8.  This was unheard of for me (I was beginning to think the treadmill was broken because I can't normally run over 6.5 for more than a minute without exhausting myself).  Before I knew it I was done the first 10 minutes and was well over the mile mark.  My colleagues looked on from the cafeteria (which is just on the other side of the glass) and while they chowed down on fries, et al...I was gearing up for another set.  The second set was just as fast, even breaking the 8 minute mile pace for a minute or so...I was elated.  Perhaps all the LSR's are finally paying off.

Unfortunately, my running buddy wasn't fairing as well...Ave Maria on her iPod didn't contribute to a fast pace.  So I queued up a couple of songs for her on my iPod and she was able to finish at a decent pace.

I was glad I managed to get the run in at lunch...the rest of my day went off without a hitch and now I can enjoy the evening chilling on the couch and watching Cornation Street (I am behind a couple of episodes).

Cheers!

PS  I stepped on the scale after the run and was down the rest of the cruise weight.  Here's hoping the week stays on track and it's still gone come Friday (weighing in early as we're skiing on Saturday).

and on the seventh day...we rest

Sunday was supposed to be a rest day, but I managed to squeeze in a quick cycle (only 30 minutes).  It got the kinks out from the run on Saturday...then we sat in the hot tub and the steam room at the pool to sweat out any remnants from Saturday night's post cruise dinner (more the wine and the half a pound of brie than the supper). Mmm, was it good.

Tonight's work out was a 60 minute bike - it went by very quickly and I was glad I did the full hour, instead of the 30 minutes I planned.  I managed to find some decent tunes on the iPod and that helped me work in some hills and speed work.  Soon enough I will be outside and riding my new bike - then the real work will begin.  I also managed to swim for 20 minutes (was supposed to be 29) but after a 1000m of pull and kick drills, the steam room was calling my name.  And we all know how easily I am swayed by the temptation of evil...and the steam room.  It was well worth it. I managed to sweat out the rest of the weekend as well as the stress of today.

Tomorrow is a run - only 29 minutes - and I am also starting a learn to run clinic at work.  The annual spring kick off of accountant who think they want to run (more like lose the year-end pounds from ordering in). We'll start off simple and see how we do...I am very excited to have people to run with at work at lunch.  That will help me double up on some of the training for the tri - not to mention the half marathon which is only 4 weeks away.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers!

The wind at my back...and then at my front.

Well today was the day...outside running began, again.  It was 18K with the girls and we managed to run into the wind both ways.  I don't recall any wind in Florida - more of a gentle breeze off the ocean that was refreshing if anything. Nothing like the brisk northeasterly we faced this morning - and yes we had it in our face going out and again coming home.  I think I must be a freak of nature.

Either way, we did it - all 18K and I felt great.  Ironically, we ran 7K outside in January and I complained the whole way thinking I was going to drop dead of exhaustion.  Not today, I finished strong and with my head up.  Made the 7K look like the cake walk it should've been - not sure what happened.  Oh wait, it was Christmas weight gain - now I remember.  The total time was 2:15 (which for a long slow run was decent), we are definitely on track for our training times. My knee was a little uncomfortable in the final legs but nothing like last year. Tonight I had some wine with dinner and a couple of Motrin, which numbed the pain temporarily.  I plan on topping up the Mortin tonight and an ice pack, to boot.

The jury is still out on tomorrow morning's spin class.  I may settle for a short bike and a swim (given today was supposed to be the rest day and tomorrow the long run - anything I do tomorrow is a bonus). However, after tonight's post-cruise dinner, I think the rest will be after the work out.

Today's weigh in went as expected, I found 2 pounds on the cruise that I had lost before we left. No regrets - I enjoyed it.  And as the ladies said this morning, "easy on, easy off".  Sounds more like an ad for undergarments...

All for now.

TGIF...

What a week...why do four day work weeks seem busier than five day work weeks? All I can say is I'm glad it's over.  Yesterday morning was another 6 a.m. spin class...usually Thursday morning's instructor is slightly older and a little less perky (although she works us just as hard); however this week I was blessed with a double dose of the twenty-something.  She worked my tail off...but it felt good when it was over.

Today we picked up the new car - the electric motor is so quiet you can't tell it's running.  It begs the question whether one can get a hybrid bike.  I'm not taking your typical moped - no this would have to look just like a bike and run so quiet no one could hear you coming (like the pedestrians in the parking lot today).  I will have to check that out.

Tonight's work out was a 45 min bike about 15 miles (although I never really looked) and a 1000 m swim (at an easy pace).  It felt good to get the "last chance" work out in before tomorrow's weigh in.  I;m sure I won't be the biggest loser this week.

While I was down 3 lbs before the cruise, I think I was dehydrated and have managed to find most of what I lost.  Tonight at the gym I was exactly what I was the week before we left.  So I may be flat - I am not disappointed, as the cruise had it's own goal and now I can recommit for the half marathon (a similar weight goal as the cruise) and the triathlon (I'd like to be down another 10 before then and would be happy with 5).

Tomorrow I am running with the "girls" - who have been patiently awaiting my return.  I promised I'd run on Saturdays now that curling is over.  It's 18K and luckily it's a LSR (long slow run).  I anticipate an hour and 50 minutes...and will let you know how it goes.  I only hope the weather cooperates.  After Florida, I have decided I am a fair weather runner (like 80 degrees, no wind, an ocean/beach, etc.).

Cheers!

Who gets up this early?

All I can say is why did the alarm clock go off so early...and who's idea was it to sign up for a 6 a.m. spin class.  What was I thinking?

Surely there are better things to do at 6 in the morning to get my blood flowing and my heart pumping - if you know what I mean.  I must admit that as tired as I was after yesterday's double work-out, I was glad I went. (And yes, I did make it back to the gym last night to squeeze in the 1000m swim and 20 mile bike).

This morning, the perky 20 something year-old girl in the front of the room made me work much harder than I intended to (or thought I could), but I managed to hang in.  I miss Paul - the spin class instructor from the boat - now he was worth getting up for! On the brighter side, at least my work-out is done for the day.  I do enjoy that fact a lot!

Today was the first day back at work...and while my calendar has plenty of "desk time", I managed to have back to back meetings all day.  It's like holidays never happened - funny how fast things revert to their old ways.

I am looking forward to this weekend - I am shopping for my bike.  I haven't decided what to call it, I'll have to wait and see what it looks like and then come up with something clever. I must admit that Jane Hathaway is going to be hard to beat.

All for now...

Back on solid ground...I think!

We made it back from the cruise...although my body is still rocking and it feels like I'm still on the boat.  Here's an update on my training and diet while we sailed the Caribbean...I managed to eat Raisin Bran and Yogurt for breakfast almost every day.  Lunch was usually liquid...yes, I chose to drink my points most afternoons.  Then at dinner I chose the "Spa Selection" six of the eight nights (and skipped dessert most of those nights as well - except for the occasional lime sherbert and the disgusting diet pumpkin pie).  Two nights (the last two) were feasts and no holds barred - let's say the three pounds I gained were spread over those two meals.

Working out on the boat started off well.  We had 3 o'clock spin classes with Paul (from Australia) and he was well worth the effort of attending.  I misses one of the classes due to alcohol poisoning...OK, I was just drunk (remember the liquid lunch comment above).  I also managed to run 5K on the track - it was only 100m - so that meant 50 laps.  I was dizzy by the time I was finished.  Luckily, Alan and I squeezed in the long run on Thursday night in Ft Lauderdale or I would have been toast.

By Thursday, I was ready to come home and get back on the exercise routine - not to mention eat healthier again.  I never thought I would say i was looking forward to weight watchers and working out.  It must be a mid-life crisis...or perhaps it was the 10-15 foot swells we were sailing through that had us all feeling a little queezy.

We made it back late Saturday night (around 1:30 am) and yesterday was to be a 12K run.  I chose to rest/recover (OK - detox) and spent the day watching TV and napping, mostly the latter.

This morning we were greeted with a light dusting of the white stuff. Why don't we live in Florida?  I ran 12K run (from yesterday) at the gym this morning - I still can't figure out why the track kept swaying. Will the rocking motion ever stop?  Maybe it was my body getting back at me for having such a good time this past week.  Either way, I managed to stagger through the run and at times, was certain I was going to stumble from the imbalance.  Oh well, I'm sure it will get better soon...

We're heading back to the gym around 5 o'clock for a bike and swim. Then I will be back on track and fully caught up.

Cheers!

Training Florida style...

Up at 3:30 am, board a plane, arrive in Florida at 4:00 pm, settle into hotel, then hit the highway for 8 miles. Literally, hit the highway. It was a great way to start a vacation...and was down 3 lbs this mornings at WW (which was a $50 cab ride away).

The things this triathlon is having me do...wow!

Gotta run, the breakfast buffet is calling my name.

Will update post-cruise!

I love Morning Classes...Brier style.

Sorry I have missed the past few days, it's been a little busy.  My weigh in on Saturday morning showed me up 0.2 lbs. I did try a new eating program last week - where I added additional food for my workouts - and I wasn't hungry at all.  I may have added a little too much or at the wrong times, so I am going to play with it for a little while longer (I don't want to give up too soon).

I also went to Winnipeg this weekend for the Brier (I'm on the Committee for next year when it's in Calgary).  In addition to my two 12 hour shifts in the cash office, where I ran non-stop refilling token booths  I also managed to run 8.5 miles on the treadmill on Sunday morning.  I was so bored I wanted to stick a pencil in my eye... In the end, I was I glad I ran because the food was unhealthy and there were also a few beer consumed.  Not to mention "Morning Classes" where you drink gin, lemon juice, sugar, soda and ice - at 7:30 in the morning.  The best Brier tradition I have discovered so far.

I flew home this morning and tonight I was so tired I could hardly stay awake to watch Coronation Street (and it's only 30 minutes). So I took the night off.

Tomorrow I will be back at the gym full out - bike 53 minutes and swim 26 minutes. I need to get all my workouts in before we leave. Thursday night we are running from the hotel - 16 K - and then we found a weight watchers meeting a few miles from the hotel, so we can weigh in before we get on the boat. That way we will know exactly how we did on the cruise.

I will let you know how the week unfolds.

Can you hear me now?

I missed blogging yesterday and by the time I settled in for the night, I was too tired (or lazy) to come back downstairs and update my workout.

Yesterday was supposed to be run, but I switched it to a bike because for a brief moment Wednesday night I thought I might do the spin class.  The class happened - just without me. I have come to appreciate that I do not work out well at 6 a.m. So the bike was now an after work thing.  Then I remembered (was reminded) that family from out of town were spending the night and I had to be home to greet them.  Luckily they were going to call before they arrived at the house.  How was I going to make this work...don't you love call forwarding.

So there I sat in the gym pedaling my butt off, thinking the faster I pedaled, the closer I would get to the 80 minute mark.  I had my headphones on and I was set...just a few more songs and I would make the 60 minute mark - almost done. I knew if I finished 60 minutes before they arrived, I would be happy with that.

Too bad the phone wouldn't stop ringing...hopefully no one mistook my heavy breathing on the phone as some perverted old man.  Another thing about working out and answering the phone...you have to remove the headphones. Hello, can you hear me now? It only happened once.

Can I borrow your towel...?

Funny how things just happen sometimes.  Today I had to leave work early to pick up my "uniform" for the Brier, so I called Alan and offered to pick him up.  When I worked downtown, I always felt a ride was better than the bus...so now I try to return the favor to him.

Alan was debating whether to go to the gym or not...and the way it was sounding, it was heavily weighted towards the not going side.  I knew I would have to get in a swim in order to stay on track with my program...and I had my stuff in the car.  So after a few minutes of chatting, we decided we would just stop at the gym on the way home - then we couldn't talk ourselves out of it.

the swim was 2000 m, which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  We finished in about 45 minutes - give or take.  I did mostly pull drills, which was perfect because Alan was doing a recovery swim (slower than normal).  So were were able to keep a pretty even pace with each other.  It felt good to finish the swim and head into the steam room to rid my mind of some of the day's stress.  Then it was a quick shower, change clothes and head home for the night.

Only thing was, in my gym bag was all my swimming stuff...except a towel.  Luckily, Alan was there.

Another run...another tired puppy

Today was a long day at the office, with interviews consuming most of my day.  I was glad to be heading home at a decent time and although I wasn't looking forward to tonight run - I knew I had to stick to the plan if I was ever going to be successful in this triathlon thing I am pursuing.

I told Alan on the way home that I would take Angus for a walk and then decided he could join me on my run - as it was supposed to be a short one.  When Heather called me back, she said she e wanted to run indoors...but the thought of Angus' puppy dog eyes must have been enough to sway her.  So a half hour later, we headed out with Angus in tow (er rather with him towing us).  He loves to run and just like his father he has some trouble pacing himself.  He was really giving it for the first 10-15 minutes.  Then he was tuckered out by the time we made it up the first hill...lucky for me, as I was able to keep up to him in his tired state.  The run was only 4K and lasted just under 30 minutes...so it was a very comfortable pace.  Although, the time reflects all the pea breaks Angus had to take - like at every tree, curb and what's left of the snow banks on people's lawn.  If he hadn't tagged along, I suspect we would have been a few minutes faster - but I am not complaining.

Angus hasn't moved much since we got home...even at dinner, he didn't come to the table to see what we were having.  So I must have succeeded in tiring him out.  At least I didn't go so far as to need a ride back.

One down...137 more to go!

Today was day one of my 20 week training program for the Peach Classic this summer.  The whole day started on a good note, with an off-site (all day meeting out of the office).  It was my boss'  birthday today and that was definitely one of of the highlights - although the mini-chocolate pastries that came with dessert in his honor didn't really do much for my diet.  Oh well, we only live once.  I ate very healthy all day (except for the chocolate mousse).  Luckily, mine was sugar-free.

I managed to make it home early from the off-site (another bonus) and take Angus for a walk and go vote.  My public duty is now officially complete.  And while I have no strong political convictions - I really didn't want Ed Stalmach to win this one.  Anybody would have been better than the PCs. Oh well, my voting gives me the privilege of complaining about the government for the next four years.

My work-out tonight was a 48 minute bike followed by a 24 minute swim.  The bike was uneventful - although I used the spin class bike instead of the regular stationery bikes to change things up a bit.  It made a slight difference...in how sore my ass was.  Holy cow those seats hurt...I don't know how I am going to last two hours in the Peach Classic.  I didn't even have time for the numbness to wear off, when I had to drag my butt into the pool.  The swim was great - I felt comfortable all night (even with the 3 slower swimmers I had sharing the lane). They were very courteous and that makes a huge difference - when they get out of your way because they know you're faster than they are.  It made the 24 minutes go by so quick.  Then again, we've been swimming 45 to an hour, so this really was short.  After the work out, I managed to crawl into the steam room for some rest - that's the perfect way to end any work out.

Alan had to work late - and he made supper instead of going to the gym.  That was really nice of him.  I am very lucky to have him supporting me in this and supper waiting when I got home from a big work out (not to mention lunch for tomorrow as well) really does make me appreciate how lucky I am.

Only a few more days until the cruise...horray!

All for now!

Where did the weekend go?

Yesterday was a rest day for me...and was I thankful.  We had WW in the morning - I was down a pound, which is much better than I was expecting.  I am still 2 lbs away from my goal for the cruise, so we'll see where this week takes us.  Following WW, I had a meeting for the Brier - Alan and I are running the banking for the Brier Patch (alcohol and money - what a combination). Jocelyn had an eye appointment and I managed to squeeze in a store or two to find some shorts for the cruise...I think I am done (although my bathing suit is too big now, with the 22 lb weight loss).  I may need to resort to safety pins.  What a problem to have.  Ending off the day was curling - my last official game of the season, as I am off to Winnipeg next weekend for the Brier and the cruise the week after that. My team is now in the semi finals, so it would have been nice to be able to stay and finish off the season.  Oh well...next year.

Today was a long, slow run...and 14K.  We planned to run outside but the weather didn't cooperate.  It was minus 15 and both Heather and I have resigned to the fact that we are becoming fair weather runners.  I know, you'd think the Penguin would relish in the cold temperatures...but this penguin is quickly turning into a tropical species.  The first half of the run was good, I felt great going 'round the track (a total of 33 times for the whole run).  There were some beginner runners were we were able to encourage and they were really grateful to have the positive motivation from us (we must have appeared seasoned).  Alan was also doing a long run today - and every couple of minutes he would lap us.  We could hear the pounding of his feet and the music from his iPod, so it was quite humorous to both Heather and I.  The last half of the run was not so great...I got really tired about 9K in and was sure we were going to cut it short.  But Heather was my rock and she kept me going...that and the "cute guy" she kept wanting to look at every lap.  So at least there was something to look forward to every time 'round - at least for her.  Then the last 6 laps seemed to go by quite quickly...before we knew it we were done.  Our time was just under 90 minutes, which puts us well ahead of a 2:30 half marathon race pace.  We're shooting for 2:15 ish, so we were happy with the pace of this "long slow run".

Tomorrow is the official start of my 20 week training program for Penticton.  I am excited and nervous.  I have been training well ahead of the schedule so far, with the exception of the bike, where I am a little short on the suggested times.  I will work on that this week. Maybe a few new tunes on my iPod will help with those long evenings in the saddle.

All for now, I am off to visit the folks and assist them with their income taxes.  Then a quite night tonight. All for now...

Bring on the dessert tray...

Today was my "orientation" at the Diabetes Clinic...despite 2 hours of great information, the session was not necessary.  Turns out, I am not diabetic.  I was/am borderline and am still in the high risk category, especially with my family history - sister, cousins, etc. who are all Type I diabetics.  So bring on the dessert tray cause the Penguin is back...and he's got a sweet tooth that needs satisfying.

OK, I know that won't help but it sure felt nice knowing I am once again (or still) relatively healthy.  Today was otherwise uneventful - the Board package was sent, which was the last deadline for a couple of days.  I had lunch with a colleague from the CFO Leadership program in the fall.  It was great to catch up and see how things were in his world - all is well.  He's an avid cyclist and a competitive one at that, and has given me some leads on a good bike shop - not to mention a contact who can help us save a few dollars when I buy my bike in a couple of weeks.  I will definitely be taking him up on that offer.

As for training, I am meeting Heather (my running buddy) at the gym this evening and we are running 8K.  We're building up for Sunday's 13K run.  I have to really give an honorable mention to my running buddies - Michelle and Lindsay - who've been running outside and waiting for me to re-join them since my knee/shoulder issues last year. They've switched their long runs to Saturdays which conflicts with curling, so I can't join them until after the cruise when curling os over for the season.

After the run tonight, I will join Alan in the pool for a swim - likely an easy swim to cool down from the run - say 1000m.  Then its the steam room or the hot tub to bring the week to a close.  I'll fill you in on how the run/swim goes tomorrow.

Tomorrow is weight watchers and I am nervous that I may have found a pound or two that were previously lost (not that I was looking for them).  I know that last week I had a cold and was dehydrated which may have added an extra pound to what I would have otherwise lost.  Not that I am obsessed...OK a little and I would really like to lose 5 pounds before the cruise in two weeks - so any gain would be a step backwards. I'll keep my fingers crossed and let you all know how it goes in the morning.

All for now...

Those seats are so hard...

OK...so I didn't make it to spin class this morning with Alan.  Then again, it was pretty much decided last night when I went to bed.  I did make it to the gym tonight after a long day at the office.  Actually, it wasn't as long as most these past few weeks...I was home just past 7:00.

Tonight's workout was a bike...60 minutes on the stationery bike and does my butt hurt.  You'd think with those comfy tractor type seats, it would be bearable - but it's not.  At least not yet...
The ride went well once I got into it (about 15 minutes in) and then before I knew it, it was over. I must admit the last 15 minutes were made more enjoyable with the "joggler" who was running around the track juggling mini-medicine balls.  Alan's color commentary made that quite humorous for several of us in the cardio section.  I don't know if alan realized it but every time he told me how many times the joggler had dropped his balls, the girls on the stair master would giggle.  I couldn't help but smile...and then before we knew it, they were both coming 'round again.  And we would get another update...or some good old fashioned mockery.

Tomorrow night, Heather and I will be meeting to go for a run.  I may add a swim - not sure.  I have my orientation at the Diabetes Clinic tomorrow afternoon, so I may decide to spend the afternoon in the bar - drowning my sorrows (and soothing my pin-pricked fingers).  Although, I think alcohol thins the blood...maybe this won't be such a good idea.  Or I could spend it in Bernard Callebaut sampling milk chocolate truffles (for the last time).  Hmm, drinking or chocolate...maybe I'll go big and have it all.

Off to bed for me...I'm wiped.

Waddle on...

Well, today was a much better day at the office.  My crankiness has turned to resignation and I am left waiting, quite impatiently I might add, for the cruise to get here.  Not that I want to wish my life away - I think I am just in need of a vacation.  OK...enough belly aching.  Actually, it was quite a productive day and I am cleaning up several things that need to be taken care of before we leave in two weeks on vacation.

Tonight, my running buddy Heather, joined me for a 6.5K run.  This was the second run for me in two days and I was surprised at how well I felt.  I have been trying to stagger my work outs, so I don't do the same "event" back to back. Partly because I want the variety - but more importantly because I am still leery about running too many days in a row with my knee issue from last year (I don't want to over tired it).  Having said that, tonight was the second run in as many days and our time was quite impressive - just under 45 minutes, including walk breaks. I still do the "10 and 1" routine from the Running Room. For me, it's a great way to recover in between and it gives me something to look forward to.  I must admit the run was much more enjoyable with Heather's company as opposed to my iPod, which is in need of some new music.  We chatted about lots of stuff and I was grateful for the company.  We've made plans for a Friday night work out - another run.  What a way to start the weekend, huh. We're a couple of party animals.  We also tossed around the idea of our Sunday long run being outside, if the weather continues to cooperate.  I am really looking forward to that as a possibility...I enjoy running outdoors so much more than inside (although I am becoming a fair weather runner quite quickly).  I think Sunday is supposed to be 13K - so inside would be almost painful going around that track 20 plus times.

Tomorrow morning is supposed to be a 6 a.m. spin class, but I am going to bail and work out in the evening.  I enjoy the Tuesday morning class but come the end of the week, I just don't have what it takes to drag my sorry butt out of bed at 5:30 and go to spin class.  Especially with some perky twenty-something year old in the front, who - I might add - barely breaks a sweat. While, on the other hand, one could possibly drown in the pool of sweat that's pouring off me in those 50 minutes.  I will see how I sleep tonight and how I feel in the morning - and then decide.  Besides, the evening work out is a nice way for me to end the day and get rid of the stresses of the day.

All for now...off to bed for this camper.

Back in the Pool...

Today, I was reminded that the Stampede Half is the same weekend as Alan's half Ironman (the Great White North), so I won't be running.  Whew...talk about an easy out.  I will go north and support Alan in his big race.

Tonight I made it to the gym for my 5K run and 1000m swim - as I committed last night.  I decided to switch the order so I swam last - that way I could recover in the steam room and soak in the hot tub for a few minutes.  The few minutes at the end sweating and soaking it out really does make the workout that much more bearable - it's like having something to look forward to.

My run went as planned...pace was a little slower than I anticipated (34 minutes for the 5K). Although this did include time to stop and blow my beak - damn head cold still isn't completely gone.  No complaints on the overall run as I felt pretty good.

The swim wasn't as great - there were so many old ladies in the pool (not to be stereotypical - they were all old and couldn't swim).  After swimming over them a couple of times, they still didn't seem to get the hint, so I had to switch to the fast lane - I don't like that lane as my competitive nature takes over and I have to swim and keep up with everyone (has its pros and cons).  Oh well, no complaints otherwise, my breathing was a little heavy - but blowing your nose underwater is much easier than when you're running.

I stepped on the scale when I got to the gym and was a little disappointed.  I think the cold dehydrated me and I am now retaining the water again.  I am increasing my intake to compensate and hopefully by saturday morning, I will have dropped the 3 lbs that have found their way back onto my thighs.

All for now...

Back on track...

I had the crappiest day at work - Board meetings until 1:00 - and some of the topics didn't go as anticipated.  In the end, all is well and I think it was just the culmination of several months of stuff finally getting done that made it seem more than it really was.

Tonight, I was lucky enough to have my daughter join me at the gym and we substituted a bike for the run (I was trying to make up for missing yesterday).  No looking back now - 45 minutes on level 12, with the final 4 on level 16...were my legs tired.  It felt great to get back in the saddle, pardon the pun.

Tomorrow is a swim and run, double the fun!  but the distances look manageable - only 1000 m and 5K, should be about an hour in total at a relaxing pace.

I saw an email about the Stampede marathon (HSBC) and was thinking I might consider the half. I have a day or two before the early bird registration closes...so I'll see how the rest of my week goes.

My diabetes seems to be under control (I was diagnosed in January) and I will see what the clinic says this Friday when I go for my orientation.  Luckily, it's only Type II (old-age diabetes as my friends and family like to remind me) and it can be controlled by exercise and diet - at least that's my plan.  I am getting tired of pricking my finger 3 times a day...I didn't think it would be so painful, but that little needle is a pain in the butt.  Also, I am still "sneaking" the odd piece of chocolate as part of my snacks - that will have to go (even though they are permitted in the WW program).  I do wonder if the diabetes is contributing to my mood swings - I have been a little bitchy the past few weeks.  This holiday is well overdue.

The cruise is just over 2 weeks away and I am hoping to work-out enough to lose another 5 pounds - I really want to be in the 170s for this holiday.  That would be an accomplishment.

All for now...

And so it begins...

I've finally done it...I signed up for my first triathlon - the 2008 Peach Classic in Penticton, BC. I have just over 20 weeks to turn my "Penguin" body into something resembling that of Batman or Robin (I'd settle for Alfred at the rate I'm going).

My journey started last year when I went to support my partner, Alan, and Jenn in their first attempts at the race. Somehow you just get caught up in all - and before you know it, you're telling people that you're going to do it next year. Well here I am following through on what must have been a drunken promise...and I am as excited as I am nervous.

Swimming is my strongest of the three legs, as I used to swim competitively in my youth (albeit many, many years ago).  I am hoping the bike won't be too difficult although I am worried the uphill route will wear me out and leave me exhausted before the run.  Speaking of which, I started running a couple of years ago and have surprised myself at how much I enjoy it, my longest has been 20K - so one might think a 10K would pale in comparison - however, it's the third leg and I am worried I won't have reserved enough strength.

To prepare myself for the run, I have also signed up for the 2008 Calgary Policemen's Half Marathon in April.  This race thwarted me last year, as 3 weeks before I developed "runner's knee" - something I never believed in until I had all the symptoms and could hardly walk for 2 weeks.  I won't fall victim to this again.

Well, there you have it...I'll update this daily to fill you in on my training days and see how things progress.  Here's what's happened so far...

I joined Weight Watchers in January (5th) and have lost 21.6 lbs to date.  I am please to be back where I was last spring - weight wise.  I also started training a couple of weeks ago, alternating bikes - including Tuesday morning spin classes, swims and runs.  I am focusing on developing the "habit", as opposed to following a routine. My official training starts on March 3rd. Last week I came down with a head cold and took the week off to recover - I think was a combination of post-year-end (working like a dog) and being plain-old tired.

I will be back at the gym tomorrow...and will be running 13K to make up for the long run I missed today (as part of my half marathon training).
